Crowns have been the go-to option to treat various dental issues such as broken or damaged teeth. In fact, they are the most common dental procedures used in the field of dentistry. Typically, getting a crown takes several weeks. But thanks to advancements in technology, you can now walk into a dental office, get a crown, and step out with brand new teeth on the same day. Let’s take a look at what same-day crowns or CEREC is all about.

CEREC : What is it?

CEREC, otherwise known as Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic, is a new method of creating dental restorations. These restorations are used to repair damage to your teeth caused by decay or injury. The restorations are usually carried out with the help of CAD/CAM and  involves creating designs based on 3-D scans and impressions of your dental structure before sending it to a specialized unit that prints out ceramic replacements.

You can break a CEREC procedure into three simple steps:

  • The dentist assesses the damage to your teeth. Then they will do a 3D scan of your oral structure.
  • The scan is fed into a computer system that will create a model of your teeth with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Ceramic is sent through a grinding/milling machine which creates your replacement tooth based on the scans and the resulting digital model.

What are the advantages of CEREC?

There are several advantages to using CEREC. Here are a few:

  • Same-day crowns: The biggest advantage of a CEREC procedure is you get a crown on the same day of your dental office visit. This means you don’t have to wait two weeks and have to go through the anxiety and embarrassment of being in public with  broken or damaged teeth.
  • They are accurately made and strong: Studies have shown that CEREC offers a great level of accuracy and is hence reliable. Also, a study conducted on the strength of the CEREC crowns has shown that they are sturdy and abrasion resistant.
  • Real tooth-like appearance: A CEREC crown looks so realistic and blends so perfectly with the surrounding teeth that your friends won’t be able to tell that you have a crown.

How much does a CEREC cost?

A CEREC can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500 for a single tooth, which is comparable to the cost of a conventional crown. For the exact cost, make sure to contact Korte Family Dentistry. You will need to check with your insurance provider on whether they would cover the cost of a CEREC as it can get expensive. You can also talk to the dentist to get a payment plan for the procedure.

Same-day crowns or CERECS are a godsend for people with teeth damage as they get their problem fixed in a single day.
